Bordered on the north by Hawthorne Blvd. (Hawthorne & Sunnyside neighborhoods), on the south by Division Street, on the east by SE 30th Avenue, and on the west by SE 20th Avenue (Ladd’s Addition), Colonial Heights is a short drive to downtown Portland.
The majority of homes in Colonial Heights were built in the 1920s. A few Victorian homes were constructed in the 1890s, followed by many grand Craftsman and Old Portland (Four Square) style homes in the 1910s. The “roaring 20s” and later 1930s saw mostly English style (including Tudor) and Bungalows being built with a sprinkling of Colonials and Mediterraneans. You will also find nice ranch homes from the 1940s and later interspersed around the neighborhood.
Colonial Heights is part of the Hosford-Abernethy Neighborhood Development Association. The neighborhood association was created to serve as a way for area residents to interact with local government, business leaders, and each other. It is very active in transportation, green space, business development, educational, and environmental issues.
The name Hosford-Abernethy represents two public schools within the neighborhood area. Hosford Middle School is named after Chauncey O. Hosford, a Methodist minister who at one time owned 200 acres of land on Mt. Tabor. Abernethy Elementary School is named after George Abernethy who was also a Methodist missionary and Oregon’s first provincial governor. Cleveland High School is the neighborhood high school for Colonial Heights. All three schools are rated strong or outstanding by the Oregon Department of Education.
