Lake Union

Just north of downtown Seattle sits a residential area that is lively in color and is known for its incredible views over Lake Washington. This unique neighborhood, called Lake Union, creates a vivacious “union” situated between Lake Washington and the Puget Sound.

Originally named by Thomas Mercer in 1854, Lake Union has grown into one of Seattle's most desirable home locations. Tourists are attracted to the area knowing that the movie ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ was filmed there. The residents enjoy the outstanding views of the Seattle skyline and Space Needle on a clear day. One of the most common forms of housing available is the floating boat houses that grab attention from both land and water. There are also many condominiums that provide views of the lake and city.

The rarest forms of housing are the waterfront homes. The houseboats may be a completely new and different concept for some home owners but there is such a large variety of them that they can fit anyone’s home needs. They range in size from quaint and small to large and spacious; the same is true for the décor of each floating home. A bonus for the boat house owners is nonexistent real estate taxes, though certain dock fees and sales tax must be accounted for.

In addition to the variety of housing options for residents also comes the endless amount of recreational activities. At the north end of Lake Union is Gas Works Park, which hosts an assortment of festivals and Seattle Peace concerts. Other recreational options include boating, sailing, rowing, kayaking, or boarding some of the most spectacular yachts for a trip to the San Juan Islands. Other than water activities, there is the Lake Union Trail that has 6.2 miles of walking or biking space taking you through shops, restaurants, different house boat communities, and views of Lake Washington. Another nearby well-known trail is the Burke Gillman Trail, which is perfect for a leisurely walk accompanied by guests or even a canine friend.

If sailing is something you take pride in then the Duck Dodge is the perfect weekly escape on the water. Every Tuesday, sail boats fill the water space around the union to gather and enjoy their vessels. Another boat get-together is the Dragon Boats event, where boating enthusiasts gather to share their passion for the water.

Lake Union is home to fine eateries that can be found hugging the lake shore. Just some of the renowned dining spots include the BluWater Bistro, Daniel’s Broiler steakhouse, and outstanding seafood and USDA prime steaks at Chandler’s.

Lake Union residents appreciate their surroundings, friendly neighbors, beautiful wildlife, and colorful boats and seaplanes just outside their windows.
