According to Nisqually legend, the Yelm area was first known as Shelm, which described the shimmering heat waves that dance above the prairie when the sun shines hot. The settlers eventually shortened this to Yelm.
Yelm is now a growing community with many amenities, while still retaining its small town charm and atmosphere.
Yelm is a bedroom community for residents working in the surrounding cities of Tacoma, Olympia, and Centralia. Yelm also hosts a large number of military families who are currently or were formerly stationed at nearby Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base. Yelm is located 17 miles east of Olympia with easy access to Tacoma, Olympia, and the greater Puget Sound.
Whether you enjoy boating, fishing, golfing, hiking, horseback riding or playing baseball, recreational opportunities in the Yelm area are unlimited.
The Native American trails have given way to roads, yet the Nisqually River travels on its path through the prairie like it has done for centuries.
